Praça do Comércio is commonly known as Terreiro do Paço, one of the main historical symbols of Lisbon. It is located at the end of downtown Lisbon, next to the Tagus River. The buildings surrounding the square have always been of great importance for housing the most important public entities. Nowadays they also host cultural activities. In the square you will find the famous Arco da Rua Augusta, which is the entrance to Baixa Pombalina, and the Martinho da Arcada café, the oldest café in Lisbon and the favourite of the writer Fernando Pessoa. Pessoa is considered one of the greatest Portuguese poets of all time. In the centre of the square is the statue of King José I, built in 1775. It is one of the most worthwhile places to visit in Lisbon.
