Amsterdam-Schipol airport located on south of Amsterdam, in the municipality of Haarlemmermeer, it is at 22 km from the city center. Schipol has 3 terminals and is the main airport of Netherlands for passenger traffic.
Amsterdam International Airport, Schiphol (IATA: AMS, ICAO: EHAM) is the airport of Amsterdam, located 15 km from the city and is the main airport of the Netherlands. Royal Schiphol Group has four owners the State of the Netherlands, the municipality of Amsterdam, the municipality of Rotterdam, and Groupe ADP.
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is one of the world's most important airports for intercontinental connections, usually between Europe and the United States, Canada or Asia. This success is partly due to the fact that Schiphol serves the population of Amsterdam and the entire Randstad, the Dutch megalopolis of over 7 million inhabitants that also includes The Hague, Rotterdam and Utrecht, all of which are within 60 kilometres of the airport.
Schiphol is the base of the Dutch airlines KLM, Martinair, Transavia, and the American airline Delta Air Lines. The airport has a large shopping area for travellers and people passing through via the train station.
There are several ways to travel to get from the airport to the city. You can travel by train, which arrives straight at Amsterdam Central Station, which is located in the city centre, or go by car, which will take you via the E19 to the city centre. Furthermore, from Schiphol airport, you can also take a taxi which, as with any airport, will be waiting for you at the exit, or you can very quickly take the bus which will take you from the airport to various places in the city centre.
Taking a taxi can be expensive, but is recommended if you are carrying a lot of luggage or travelling late at night. The taxi rank is outside Schiphol Plaza and the journey to the city centre takes no longer than 15 minutes.
Tourists are often the victims of scams in Amsterdam taxis. This means that passengers are not in danger but that there is a chance that an unauthorized taxi driver may be trying to scam his customers financially. If you do decide to take a taxi, check out the following tips;
The taxi driver tries to distract his customers by talking joyfully to them. Upon arrival at the agreed destination, the taxi driver will say that he has forgotten to turn on the meter and will therefore demand a much higher amount than the actual price should be. Therefore, always ask the driver to turn on the meter to prevent this from happening.
Taxis in Amsterdam must have a number on their roof. Should the driver refuse to use the meter, write down this number and file a complaint via the taxiklacht.nl. There is also an English version.
The price is based on the price per kilometre. For a taxi driver, it is therefore attractive to drive as many kilometres as possible each time. Therefore, the taxi drivers like to drive a touristic route and show the customers the surroundings. Say that you have been to Amsterdam before and know the area well. Then, when arriving, take a bike or public transport and explore the city yourself.
The taximeter should always be visible from the back seat of the taxi. A trick that taxi drivers tend to use is to set a high starting price of often as much as €15. If the meter is not visible, ask for better visibility and remember that the starting price is about €3.00 for up to 4 people and less or more €8.00 for a van.
To get to the city centre, you can take buses 197 and 370 from platform A7, in arrival hall 2. The disadvantage is that the bus makes several stops and will take longer to get to the centre. Some hotels offer their guests a free shuttle service. Finally, in the Arrivals Hall, you will find the Connection Desk that offers shuttle services to more than 50 different hotels.
It is the best way to get to the city centre (Centraal Station). The station is located in the main square of the terminal and trains are scheduled to depart every 15 minutes during the day, and every hour at night. Fares are cheap and travelling time does not exceed 30 minutes.
Avis, Budget, Hertz, National Car Rental and Sixt car rentals can be found at Amsterdam International Airport Schiphol and are located at Schiphol Plaza.
The airport has both short stay and long stay parking spaces. The short stay car parks are located within walking distance of the terminal and are both covered (P1 and P2) and uncovered.
The long-stay car park (Official Schiphol P3 Long-Stay Car Park) has a free shuttle service to the terminal every 10 minutes. Finally, there is also a luxury car park (P7), and all car parks have 24-hour security.
Valet options such as EazzyPark Schiphol Shuttle are also offered.
The fastest and most comfortable way to park in the airport. The driver will be waiting for you at the scheduled time at the terminal. At your return, call the driver, who will deliver your car to you.
The cheapest option: free 5-15 minutes transfer to the terminal. A free shuttle will take you from the parking lot to the terminal and back upon your return.
The official car park inside the airport facilities. It is normally at walking distance from the terminal, but cheaper long stay car parks sometimes require short transfers.
