The Fundació Joan Miró was created by the artist Joan Miró himself with an initial endowment mainly composed of his private collection. Its goal was to establish an international reference space in Barcelona dedicated to Miró's work, promote research on his art and contemporary art, and highlight his legacy. It opened its doors to the public on June 10, 1975, and since then, it has been a dynamic space where Joan Miró's work coexists with contemporary artistic creation.
The Foundation, with an interdisciplinary approach, organizes temporary exhibitions of 20th and 21st-century artists and collaborates on academic projects with other institutions. Through its exhibition and educational activities program, it presents topics related to Miró's work and contemporary creation.
The building of the Fundació, designed by Josep Lluís Sert, is a unique example of collaboration between artist and architect, creating an enriching dialogue between the work and the spaces that house it. It offers visitors a journey through the life and work of Joan Miró, as well as promoting a dialogue with other artists from the 20th and 21st centuries. It is located in the Parc de Montjuïc, in Barcelona.
