The Natural Sciences Museum of Barcelona, also known as MCNB or NAT, is an institution with a rich history dating back to the 19th century. Its origins are linked to the urban parks of Ciutadella and Montjuïc in Barcelona. The building of the Martorell Museum, built between 1878 and 1882, was one of the first to be erected and housed the legacy of the naturalist Francesc Martorell i Peña, making it the city's first public museum.

Over the years, MCNB has enriched its heritage with donations from individuals, agreements with the Zoological Park, and natural parks in Catalonia, as well as its own research. In 1930, the Botanical Garden was established in the Sots de la Foixarda, and in 1935, the Botanical Institute was founded, a research center of the Generalitat.

In preparation for the 1992 Olympics, the Botanical Garden was expanded, and in 2003, a new building for the Botanical Institute was inaugurated. In 2000, the Museu de Zoologia and Museu de Geologia were merged under the name of the Museu de Ciències Naturals de la Ciutadella, and in 2008, the Botanical Garden was integrated. Finally, in 2011, the new headquarters in the Fòrum area, the Museu Blau, was opened, which is now known as the Natural Sciences Museum of Barcelona.
