Florence is a city where art and history take center stage, known worldwide for its Duomo, which boasts one of the largest domes in the world, and the majestic works of Botticelli and Leonardo housed in the Uffizi Gallery. The city is home to countless churches like Santa Maria Novella, Santa Croce, and the famous Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. Not to mention its beautiful palaces, especially the Pitti Palace, and its romantic bridges, such as the Ponte Vecchio.

Few people know that the Tuscan capital was one of the first Italian municipalities to restrict vehicle access in certain parts of the city. The Florence Restricted Traffic Zone (ZTL), which was opened in 1990, is one of the oldest in Italy, spanning 4 km. It consists of 5 sectors divided by the Arno River. When looking downstream, you'll find Sector A, which borders the historical center, Sector B, covering a large area, and Sector G, which is only active in summer, on the right bank of the river. On the other side, you'll find Sector F and Sector O, where the Boboli Gardens, Pitti Palace, and Porta Romana are located, on the left side.

Vehicles with Euro 1 petrol and Euro 2 diesel, as well as scooters, are not permitted to enter and circulate in the various sectors mentioned. However, electric and hybrid vehicles are not subject to these restrictions.

We recommend taking notes and printing a copy of the map to avoid the risk of fines.

Sector A, Sector B, Sector O in Florence's Restricted Traffic Zone (ZTL)

The ZTL in these areas is active during the following hours:

  • From 07:30 to 20:00, Monday to Friday, year-round, except on holidays.
  • From 07:30 to 16:00 on Saturdays, except on holidays.

The ZTL for summer nights is active from April to early October and operates at the following times:

  • Thursdays from 23:00 to 03:00 (Friday).
  • Fridays from 20:00 to 03:00 (Saturday).
  • Saturdays from 16:00 to 03:00 (Sunday).

During the mentioned months, the ZTL in these sectors is active from 07:30 to 03:00 the next day on Fridays and Saturdays.

In these areas, only the ZTL for summer nights applies at the following times:

  • From Thursday to Sunday, from 23:00 to 03:00.

Access Rights for the Florence ZTL

Is there a way to access Florence's Restricted Traffic Zone (ZTL)? The answer is yes! Parking garages can request regular access permits for their customers by entering the vehicle's license plate into the white list. Therefore, we recommend reserving a parking spot in one of the following parking garages in the historic center. From there, you can reach Florence's main tourist attractions on foot:
