The capital of Lombardy, known not only for fashion, luxury and entertainment, has now become the hub of the Italian economy. In fact, the city of Milan can be called the second capital of Italy and, as in any self-respecting capital, traffic reigns supreme. Milan's ZTL consists of Area B and Area C.
Area B
Area B, delimited by the red lines in the map above, occupies a large part of the Milanese territory and holds the record for being one of the most aesthetic areas in Italy in which access and circulation are forbidden to the most polluting vehicles and to those over 12 metres long for the transport of goods. The mega-ZTL is delimited by 186 electronic gates, which photograph, the license plate of the car entering and exiting the gates themselves.
The time slots in which it is active are:
- Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays, from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Access is prohibited to two-stroke Euro 0, 1 and diesel Euro 0, 1 mopeds and motorbikes and to all those cars that belong to the following environmental classes:
- Euro 0, 1 petrol;
- Euro 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 diesel without FAP;
- Euro 3, 4 diesel with FAP as standard and with field V.5 registration card > 0.0045 g/km;
- Euro 4 diesel with FAP as standard and without value in field V.5 of the registration certificate;
- Euro 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 diesel with after-market FAP installed after 31.12.2018 and with a particle mass class of at least Euro 4; Euro 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 diesel vehicles with after-market FAP installed after 31.12.2018 and with a particle mass class of at least Euro 4; * Euro 0, 1, 1, 2, 2;
The above-mentioned vehicles have no access during the indicated hours and days. However, subject to registration on the Milan municipal portal, there are certain derogations that allow
residents 25 days of access and circulation on an annual basis. For non-residents the permitted days are only 5.
Further exemptions are provided for companies based in Milan and outside Milan, medical personnel, non-self-sufficient persons, volunteers and military personnel.
However, a distinction must be made between vehicles transporting people and vehicles transporting goods, because different restrictions apply.
Euro 5 and 6 petrol and LPG, methane, bifuel, hybrid and electric vehicles may therefore enter Area B**.
Area C
The Area C map, with its 43 gates in the vicinity of the Cerchia dei Bastioni, delimits the historic centre of the Lombard capital.
The time bands in which it is active are:
- Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays, from 7:30 am to 7:30 pm.
Access is permitted to all vehicles with the following characteristics:
- electric cars, mopeds and motorbikes;
- M1 hybrid vehicles;
It must be emphasised that access is also permitted to all vehicles with a badge, which transport the disabled. Ambulances and Armed Forces cars can also circulate freely.
On the other hand, access is prohibited to all vehicles with the following characteristics:
- Euro 0 petrol;
- Euro 4 diesel without FAP
- Euro 3, Euro 4 and Euro 5 diesel with FAP with field V.5 registration papers > 0.0045 g/km
- Euro 4 diesel with FAP as standard and without value in field V.5 of the registration certificate
- Euro 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 diesel with after-market FAP installed after 31.12.2018 and with a particle mass class of at least Euro 4
- with a length of more than 7.5 metres.
The other categories of vehicles can still access Area C by purchasing a daily ticket. The ticket can be bought both online and at the parking meter for a cost of 5€, and once activated by associating it with your license plate number, you will be able to drive within the ZTL for 24 hours without the risk of receiving a fine.
Upon your arrival, the staff will inform the municipality of your reservation and provide your license plate number, so you won't receive any penalties.
Park in Milan with Parkimeter and enjoy the Duomo and many other beauties that the capital of Lombardy has to offer.
