Known for its ancient monuments and the beauty of its historic streets, the capital of Italy is unfortunately also the capital of traffic! Parking in Rome is a real nightmare, and moving from one side of the city to the other can become an odyssey. What makes it even more complicated are the various Limited Traffic Zones (ZTL), which, with the goal of reducing air pollution in the city and raising awareness among residents and tourists about the use of public transport, extend over 4.2 km² from the city center to the outskirts.
The main areas of the ZTL in Rome
The city of Rome's ZTL consists of 3 main areas: Fascia Verde, Anello Ferroviario, and Centro Storico. The historic center includes 5 additional zones: Centro, Trastevere, Tridente, San Lorenzo, and Testaccio.
Below are the limits, times, and all the information related to each of the areas described above.
The Limited Traffic Zone Fascia Verde in Rome
The ZTL Fascia Verde is the largest area, covering a large part of the outskirts of Rome. Fuel vehicles (Euro 0 and Euro 1) and diesel vehicles (Euro 0, Euro 1, and Euro 2) are not allowed to circulate from Monday to Friday, except on weekdays and weekends. If pollution limits are exceeded, these restrictions will also apply to vehicles from other environmental categories.
In addition, the municipality of Rome has announced Ecological Sundays on the following dates in 2023-2024:
- November 19, 2023
- December 3, 2023
- January 14, 2024
- February 25, 2024
- March 24, 2024
These days dedicated to environmental awareness include a total ban on all vehicles (except hybrid/electric vehicles) from 7:30 AM to 12:30 PM and from 4:30 PM to 8:30 PM.
The Limited Traffic Zone Anello Ferroviario in Rome
In the Limited Traffic Zone Anello Ferroviario, access and circulation are prohibited for all vehicles that are already excluded in the Fascia Verde ZTL from Monday to Friday. Access and circulation are also prohibited for motorcycles Euro 0, Euro 1 with 2- and 4-stroke engines from Monday to Friday.
The Limited Traffic Zone Centro Storico in Rome
The Limited Traffic Zone Centro Storico is within the Anello Ferroviario, and the same restrictions apply. In addition, circulation is prohibited for all vehicles except mopeds, motorcycles, electric, and hybrid vehicles. The daily ZTL is active:
- from 6:30 AM to 6:00 PM from Monday to Friday, except on holidays.
- from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Saturdays, except on holidays.
The nighttime ZTL is active:
- from 11:00 PM to 3:00 AM on Friday and Saturday, except on holidays.
- It is suspended during the month of August.
The Limited Traffic Zone Tridente in Rome
The Limited Traffic Zone Tridente is within the Centro Storico ZTL. In addition to the Centro Storico ZTL restrictions, access to this area is prohibited for cars, mopeds, and motorcycles during the following hours:
- from 6:30 AM to 7:00 PM from Monday to Friday, except on holidays.
- from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM on Saturdays, except on holidays.
The Limited Traffic Zone Trastevere in Rome
The Limited Traffic Zone Trastevere is within the Centro Storico ZTL.
From May to October, the nighttime ZTL is active from Wednesday to Saturday (including holidays) from 9:30 PM to 3:00 AM. From August 1 to August 31, only the nighttime ZTL is suspended. In addition, there is a speed limit of 30 km/h in this area.
The Limited Traffic Zone Trastevere is within the ZTL Anello Ferroviario, and therefore, from Monday to Friday, all the restrictions of the ZTL Anello Ferroviario are also in effect.
