We invite you to start your visit from the church dedicated to the Madonna of the Assumption, with its extraordinary combination of different architectural styles, which represent well the history of Sicily and its dominations. In fact, it was initially conceived as a Christian church, then converted into a mosque in the 19th century by the Saracens, and finally reconverted into a Christian church in 1100 by the Normans. Palermo is full of historic churches, including the most beautiful Arab-Norman church in Italy. We are referring to the church of the Martorana, located in Piazza Bellini. Rich in frescoes, mosaics and intricate decorations, it is a destination not to be missed. Another symbol of Palermo is the Fontana Pretoria, also known as the "Fountain of Shame" for its nudity, and one of the most beautiful fountains in Italy. Built in Florence, it was disassembled into 644 pieces and transported to Palermo. Unfortunately, some of the statues were damaged during transport and had to be restored. The fountain is installed in Piazza Pretoria.
Elegant, imposing, fascinating. The Teatro Massimo, the largest opera house in Italy, is perhaps the place that best represents the city of Palermo. Markets in Palermo
Another place where you can see the legacies of the different dominations that have succeeded one another over the centuries, are the different markets of the city. Food Palermo is also synonymous with good food, but at the same time cheap, as the city is famous for a high presence of street food. From the arancini (fried rice balls) to the schiacciate fritte di farina e ceci (fried flatbread made of flour and chickpeas) or the panino con la spleen (sandwich with spleen). But Palermo is not limited to savoury food: it also has a deep pastry culture with cassatas, cannoli, almond cakes.... You'll have to keep an eye on your sugar level!
The beaches of Palermo
The whole region is world famous for its stunning beaches. The Gulf of Palermo is home to numerous beaches within walking distance of the city centre, one of which is the beach of Mondello.
