Palermo is a city rich in ancient monuments, but also in picture-postcard beaches. In 2015, the historic centre was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Book your parking space with Parkimeter and stroll through the streets eating the famous arancina.

Parking in Palermo

Parking in Palermo during your stay may seem a challenge, but Parkimeter can help you find a solution thanks to our wide range of partner car parks. If you book a hotel, you should find out if it is one of those that has parking for clients and what would be the cost of this service, and then compare it with the prices of private parking in Palermo.

Long-term parking

If you are staying in Palermo for several weeks, you will probably prefer to find a long-term car park, commonly known as a low-cost car park or park and ride. It is advisable to use this option if you decide not to use your car so often, as you will spend the difference on public transport if there is no car park nearby. As for public car parks (blue stripes), the daily rates, especially in the summer season, are very high and it is not always a good option to leave your car unattended.

Public parking in Palermo

If you choose to park close to your residence, Palermo has a good distribution of public car parks. However, it is not the same to find parking near the historic centre, near the cathedral of Palermo, near the Palazzo dei Normanni. Moreover, some areas of the city centre are part of the ZTL of Palermo. It is therefore advisable to book in advance with Parkimeter.

The neighbourhoods of Palermo

Palermo has several neighbourhoods, some more famous and others less known, where you can find pieces of history, beautiful monuments and a sparkling atmosphere. In the Città Ottocentesca district, which today represents the modern and fashionable part of the Sicilian capital, the National Exhibition was held in 1861. The Capo district is the heart of Palermo, where the main monuments of the city are located, such as the Quattro Canti, the Cathedral, the Palace of Justice and the Teatro Massimo. The Kalsa is a neighbourhood of obvious Arab influence, where several palaces and historical monuments can be found.

What to visit?

Palermo is a city rich in history and culture, with a historic centre declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We invite you to start your visit from the church dedicated to the Madonna of the Assumption, with its extraordinary combination of different architectural styles, which represent well the history of Sicily and its dominations. In fact, it was initially conceived as a Christian church, then converted into a mosque in the 19th century by the Saracens, and finally reconverted into a Christian church in 1100 by the Normans. Palermo is full of historic churches, including the most beautiful Arab-Norman church in Italy. We are referring to the church of the Martorana, located in Piazza Bellini. Rich in frescoes, mosaics and intricate decorations, it is a destination not to be missed. Another symbol of Palermo is the Fontana Pretoria, also known as the "Fountain of Shame" for its nudity, and one of the most beautiful fountains in Italy. Built in Florence, it was disassembled into 644 pieces and transported to Palermo. Unfortunately, some of the statues were damaged during transport and had to be restored. The fountain is installed in Piazza Pretoria.

Elegant, imposing, fascinating. The Teatro Massimo, the largest opera house in Italy, is perhaps the place that best represents the city of Palermo. It is also accessible on a guided tour for 8 euros. To get there more easily, we recommend that you go by car and park comfortably in the AC Pignatelli car park. By reserving your parking space with parkimeter, you'll be sure to find a space and pay the most convenient price.

Markets in Palermo

Another place where you can see the legacies of the different dominations that have succeeded one another over the centuries, are the different markets of the city. Ballarò, Vucciaria and il Capo are the most famous and largest. It is in these places that you can see how their inhabitants have developed a great capacity for sales, using an autochthonous but at the same time international language, which can also be seen in the high level of integration present in these places, where over time many bars and restaurants opened by non-EU citizens have been installed, further enriching the charm of these places.

Food Palermo is also synonymous with good food, but at the same time cheap, as the city is famous for a high presence of street food. From the arancini (fried rice balls) to the schiacciate fritte di farina e ceci (fried flatbread made of flour and chickpeas) or the panino con la spleen (sandwich with spleen). But Palermo is not limited to savoury food: it also has a deep pastry culture with cassatas, cannoli, almond cakes.... You'll have to keep an eye on your sugar level!

The beaches of Palermo

The whole region is world famous for its stunning beaches. The Gulf of Palermo is home to numerous beaches within walking distance of the city centre, one of which is the beach of Mondello. However, it is advisable to plan your trip out of the city in advance, as during the summer months, finding parking on the seafront is a difficult task.

All in all, Palermo is a city to discover and enjoy in the true sense of the word. What are you waiting for to go, and remember that with Parkimeter, you can spend more time enjoying your visit without having to worry about the car, as you can choose the nearest monitored car park and compare prices to choose the cheapest and most convenient one.
